Faecal Egg Counts
(FEC)

Brown Stamp, text filling the centre reads: Same Day Results.

A Faecal Egg Count (FEC) is a simple test that checks for internal parasites in your animals. By examining a small sample of faeces, we can identify parasite levels and provide guidance on whether treatment is needed.

Why Test Regularly?

Regular FEC testing helps maintain gut health, prevent disease, and supports a targeted approach to parasite management rather than treating unnecessarily. Regular testing will also allow for early detection of infestations, track the effectiveness of treatments, and help protect your animals’ long-term well-being.

How It Works

Collecting the Faeces

Collecting the sample as close to the time of testing is best. 24 hours is the latest we work with.

When collecting the sample, aim for roughly 15-20 ‘nuggets’ of poo. The sample can be contaminated by the ground or surrounding deposits, so ensure you collect from the areas of the pile that are not in contact with debris and other interfering faeces.

Samples must be stored individually and labelled with the name or identification of your alpaca. We find sandwich bags or dog poo bags to work well. The samples should be refrigerated if they are being stored overnight.

We are able to collect samples in person if you are unable to grab them. The alpaca are not the biggest fans of this, as you can imagine, it is quite invasive!

Our Collaborative Approach

We Cannot Formally Diagnose or Prescribe Medication

With FEC testing we work alongside veterinarians and can provide them with clear photographic evidence of any parasites or issues found under our microscope. Vets can use our findings to diagnose and prescribe treatment without the need for an additional call-out or separate test.

While we can identify the type of parasite present and advise on which medications are likely to be effective, we cannot formally diagnose your animals or prescribe medication. Any treatment decisions should always be confirmed with a veterinarian.

We can assist in the administration of prescription medications for your animals upon request.
