Cria Countdown
Cria Countdown provides direct access to experienced husbandry guidance throughout late pregnancy, birthing, and the crucial first weeks of your cria’s life.​

Cria Countdown is a Remote Service ​
This allows you to ask specific questions about your alpaca's pregnancy and labour. Like the Remote Support Subscription, you will be given access to a private WhatsApp group to allow for any questions, photosor videos to be sent our way.
Your chat opens from the start of your alpaca’s third trimester or immediately if your alpaca has already entered this stage.
Support continues up to two weeks after the final cria in your herd is born , guiding you through those important first milestones of life.

After this period, your conversation history remains available to view for future reference. Any new messages will be redirected to our Remote Support Subscription should you wish to continue receiving advice.

Live Birth Support - £50 per birth

When labour begins, you can video call us for live assistance throughout the birthing process.
Whether you are unsure if labour has truly started, want reassurance that everything is progressing normally, or would like guidance throughout delivery, we are only a call away.

The £50 fee covers the entire birth for that alpaca, not individual calls or a single day.
You can contact us multiple times throughout the birth as needed. If you experience a false alarm, simply call again when things begin progressing.
*Cria Countdown Support is designed exclusively for pregnancy, birthing and neonatal cria care. Questions relating to general herd management, routine husbandry or unrelated concerns will be redirected to our Remote Support Subscription.
In-Person Birth Attendance

Where we are available and able to reach your location in time, we can attend your farm to provide practical, non-veterinary birthing support.

Post-Natal Dam & Cria Check

Worried about your newborn?
Our post-natal dam and cria checks provide reassurance during the critical period following birth.
We assess both dam and cria for post-partum recovery, general health, body condition, cria weight and strength, and the establishment of maternal bonding.
​
Neonatal checks include hygiene support where required, examination of the umbilical cord with iodine application, confirmation of sex, and assessment of early feeding success, including milk flow and udder health. If available, we also review the placenta and assess any postpartum discharge.
​
We also provide practical guidance and support for the weeks ahead, answering any questions on cria rearing, nutrition, monitoring, and general husbandry to help ensure a strong and healthy start for both dam and cria.
Every Birth Is Different
​
Every alpaca birth is unique. Some owners ask for reassurance that everything is progressing normally, while others prefer an experienced person present for additional confidence and support.
Our role is not simply to carry out the process for you. We explain what we are observing, answer your questions, and help you develop the confidence to recognise normal behaviour, identify concerns early, and make informed decisions for your animals.
To help us provide the best support possible, we recommend preparing the following:

A clean, safe and quiet area suitable for monitoring, handling and birth

A charged phone or tablet with a reliable connection for remote support

We recommend that anyone expecting a cria should have the supplies required for birth and any standard complications:

Clean towels

Warm soapy water

Cria scales or suitable weighing equipment

Hibiscrub or surgical spirit

If we are attending a birth in person, we carry our own birthing bag with essential equipment. However, we encourage owners to keep their own basic supplies available so they are prepared for any situation.
Labour signs can sometimes be misleading, or a female may show early signs that do not immediately progress.

This is normal, so don’t worry if things seem to pause for a while.

Don’t hesitate to send us photos or videos so we can help you understand what you’re seeing, explain what to expect next, and advise when further action may be needed. If in-person assistance is requested, we’ll first assess the situation via video call to ensure we can respond appropriately.
While many alpaca births progress smoothly, labour can change quickly and unexpected situations can occur. Our experience allows us to recognise concerning signs early, support calm decision-making, and help owners respond safely to changing circumstances.

If something does not go as planned, we can be there to guide you. Whether you prefer to take an active role or would like us to instruct, we can provide calm support and explain safe handling techniques to help you assist your animals.

Cria Countdown is designed to provide support and guidance, but it does not replace veterinary care. If we identify concerns that require veterinary attention, we will recommend contacting your veterinarian.
Following in-person support, you will receive a summary of observations, recommendations and any follow-up considerations.

We remain available throughout your Cria Countdown period to provide guidance and support as you navigate those first important weeks with your new cria.
